Pioneer in implementing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals among the universities in Turkey, Istanbul Technical University has been a role model with the English for Academic Purposes through Global Goals course, which was approved for the 2021-2022 Fall term. The course, enrolled by students from different departments and faculties, introduces them with 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Individual assignments and group projects enable students to internalize 21st century skills such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication through experience. Suggesting solutions to social problems like hunger, water contamination, income inequality, climate crisis, insufficient education and health services, and gender inequality by using scientific data, discussing social issues at both national and international levels, and analysing the responsibilities of all stakeholders are among the short-term benefits of the course. As for long term benefits, raising awareness about sustainable development is a significant step towards becoming a 21st century citizen. Our era is a period when independent study and learning are accepted to be the new form of education, individuals participate in decision-making processes, and the notion of citizenship has undergone a tremendous change in line with social, cultural and technological developments. The English for Academic Purposes through Global Goals course is a guide for undergraduate students, who are striving to become global citizens passing beyond geographical and political borders.

In addition to developing students’ English communication, academic and soft skills, the focus on the SDGs encourages students to consider their role as responsible 21st century global citizens.
